Solar Powered Air Conditioner

Did you know that there is a solar powered air conditioner available commercially today?  Neither did I. It's available in Australia for sure and perhaps other parts of the world as well. The Australians strike me as people who have a big incentive to master air conditioning as it's so hot there.

I just love the idea of a solar powered air conditioner. Power from the sun to run your air conditioner. Free and clean power from the sun to run your air conditioner. Skip all that old style dirty and expensive power and just go solar. Save a boatload of money along the way, what's not to like?

Solar Air Conditioning

It makes so much sense. Air conditioning requires gobs of energy. What if air conditioners could be powered by solar instead? Enter the solar absorption chiller. Solar power for air conditioning. This video covers things like vacuum powered heat pumps, the ten ton solar air conditioning system, absorption cooling systems, absorption chillers, solar thermal vacuum heat pipe technology and more.

This is an amazing technology that has the potential to change the world, for the better!

How Air Conditioning Has Shaped Population Growth in the United States

Now this is fascinating. Did you know that air conditioning is largely responsible for migration to the Western part of the United States? It makes sense, but I'd never considered it before. This is a very interesting video.

A Short History of Air Conditioning

This video is about the history of air conditioning. Willis Carrier is regarded as the "father" of air conditioning.  Mr. Carrier figured out how to help a then popular magazine (circa 1902) get it's July issue out without the colors running due to humidity. After this achievement, Mr. Carrier started an air conditioning company. Control humidity by controlling temperature was Mr. Carrier's big idea.

In the 1920s movie houses began promoting the benefits of air conditioning. By the 1950, window-based air conditioners were becoming common in homes. Before watching this video I had not realized the degree to which air conditioning changed society. The impact has been profound.

How Air Conditioning Works by Mike Ermann (Part 3)

This is the third and final installment of Mike Ermann's great three video series about how air conditioning works. You might get more out of this video if you first watch part 1 and or part 2. Either way, you are sure to get lot's of value from this video.

In this video, Mr. Ermann covers lots of topics such as: heat pumps, condensers, coolant, evaporators, air-to-air heat pumps, heating coils, geothermal heat pumps, geo-exhange/ground source heat pumps, heat syncs and much more. Don't miss this video, it's worth it.

How Air Conditioning Works by Mike Ermann (Part 2)

You will get more out of this excellent video if you first watch Part 1. Either way, Mike Ermann delivers another great video explanation of how air conditioning works. This video focuses on air conditioning for big buildings. In this second video he goes a bit deeper covering topic like: chilled water, air handling units, condensers, cooling towers, baffles, impeller fans, chiller machines, thermo-couple devices, mechanical heating, the economizer cycle, expansion valves, water side economizers and air side economizers. Highly recommended, very educational and interesting.

How Air Conditioning Works by Mike Ermann (Part 1)

This video is a deep dive on how air conditioning works. You may need to watch it a few times, as I did, in order to "get" as much as possible from it. The video does a great job of covering the science and technology of how air conditioning works. The video covers a lot of great topics like, the heat of vaporization, evaporation/boiling, condensation, coolant, boiling point of a fluid is a function of pressure and the compression-refrigeration process.

Additional topics covered include DX systems, heat exchange coils, evaporator condenser and compressor. This video also covers expansion valves. This is one of the best videos I've ever seen when it comes to teaching how air conditioning works. You can really see how ingenious the invention of air conditioning was. It makes you wonder who invented air conditioning and how they figured it out. Don't miss this video!
